About Bengal Cats

Bengals are descended from the Asian Leopard Cat, which gives them their wild, exotic appearance: bold rosettes or marbling, glitter coats that catch light like gold dust, athletic build, and a natural curiosity that borders on dog-like. They tend to be highly intelligent, active, and interactive. Unlike many cat breeds, Bengals often seek out their people, follow them around the house, and want to be involved in everything. They are not the cat for someone who wants a calm lap cat. They are the cat for someone who wants an adventure companion.

Yes, well-raised Bengals can be excellent family cats. They tend to be robust, energetic, and enjoy interaction. A home-raised Bengal like ours, used to activity and daily handling from birth, adjusts very well to children who are taught to respect the cat. They are not fragile and they generally enjoy the stimulation of a busy household. That said, every kitten has an individual temperament, and Dawn will help match you with the right personality for your specific family dynamic.

No cat is truly hypoallergenic. However, many allergy sufferers report fewer reactions with Bengals compared to other breeds. This may be because Bengals have a single-layer coat, shed less than many breeds, and produce somewhat lower levels of the Fel d1 protein that triggers most cat allergies. If you have cat allergies, we strongly recommend spending time with Bengal cats before committing to adoption. Dawn is happy to discuss this and can potentially arrange a test visit.

Yes. Bengals are high-energy cats, especially as kittens and young adults. They do best when they have climbing structures, interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and time playing with their people. They are curious and need mental stimulation as much as physical activity. Many Bengal owners find that adopting a second Bengal, or providing a cat wheel, enriches their cat's life significantly. Our kittens are raised in an enriched environment and are naturally curious and playful from day one.

Glitter coat is a Bengal-specific trait where individual hair shafts are translucent at the tips, creating a shimmering, sparkling effect in natural light. It looks like the cat has been dusted with gold or silver flecks. Not all Bengals carry the glitter gene, but it is a highly sought-after trait. Several of our cats carry strong glitter genetics, including Bogus Benson and his kitten Steele, who shows spectacular glitter in his silver coat.

Our Kittens

Our kittens are ready to go home at 12 weeks of age. By this time they are fully weaned, litter trained, have received their initial core vaccinations, and have been vet-checked. We believe 12 weeks is the ideal age for a Bengal kitten to leave their litter and begin bonding with their new family. Going home earlier than 12 weeks can lead to behavioral and social development issues, so we never place kittens before this age.

Every Shady Spots kitten goes home with: a veterinary health exam certificate, vaccination records, TICA registration papers, a starter food kit with samples of what they have been eating, a comfort item carrying familiar scents, and written care instructions. Dawn is also personally available to support you through the transition and beyond. You are never on your own after picking up your kitten.

Yes. Shady Spots Cat Ranch is a TICA registered cattery and all our breeding cats hold TICA registration. Each kitten is provided with TICA registration paperwork at adoption. TICA (The International Cat Association) is the world's largest genetic cat registry and provides a recognized, reliable pedigree record for your Bengal.

We intentionally keep our program small. We produce a limited number of litters per year so that every kitten receives the individual attention, socialization, and care they deserve. We prioritize quality over volume. This means our kittens are sometimes hard to get, which is why we recommend joining the waiting list early if you are seriously interested.

Adoption Process

Once you connect with Dawn and decide on your kitten, a deposit is required to secure your reservation and remove the kitten from availability. The deposit is applied toward the total purchase price. The balance is due at pickup. Contact Dawn directly for current deposit amounts. The full adoption contract, which outlines all terms clearly, is provided for review before any deposit is accepted.

Our primary pickup location is Silver Springs, NV. For families in California, the Pacific Northwest, or elsewhere out of state, reach out and Dawn will discuss options. We take kitten transport very seriously — your kitten's safety and comfort during the journey matters enormously to us. We do not use cargo shipping as a standard option, but can discuss ground transport or accompanied flight arrangements depending on your location.

In-person visits to the cattery are not part of our standard process, primarily to protect the health of our kittens. Instead, we offer thorough virtual visits via video call, where you meet your kitten live, see their personality, watch them interact, and ask all your questions. Many families say the virtual visit is what made them completely confident. If you have special circumstances, contact Dawn to discuss your situation.

Contact Dawn directly to discuss current accepted payment methods. All payment terms are clearly outlined in the adoption contract before you commit to anything. We do not ask for full payment upfront before a formal reservation is in place.

Health and Guarantee

We offer an 18-month genetic soundness guarantee. If your kitten is diagnosed with a hereditary genetic condition by a licensed veterinarian within 18 months of birth, Dawn will work with you to make it right. This may involve a replacement kitten or partial refund depending on circumstances. The guarantee requires a vet exam within 72 hours of going home and does not cover illness from accidents, exposure, or improper care. All conditions are documented clearly in the adoption contract.

At 12 weeks your kitten will have received their initial FVRCP vaccination series (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia). Full documentation is provided at pickup. Your own vet will need to administer follow-up boosters at 16 weeks and annually thereafter. We follow standard AAFP feline vaccination guidelines.

Yes. If you ever truly cannot keep your Bengal, no matter the reason, no matter how much time has passed, Dawn will help you find them a safe and loving new home. We ask only that you contact us before rehoming through any other channel. We never want a Bengal we raised to end up in a shelter or with an unsuitable owner. This policy applies for the life of your cat.

Cat Care

We will provide you with samples of the exact food your kitten has been eating, which we recommend continuing for at least the first few weeks to minimize digestive disruption. If you wish to change foods, transition gradually over 7 to 10 days by mixing increasing proportions of the new food with the old. Many Bengal owners prefer high-protein, species-appropriate diets. Dawn can give you specific recommendations based on what your kitten has been thriving on.

Yes, provided their environment is enriched. Bengals need space to climb, explore, and exercise. Cat trees, shelving, window perches, interactive toys, and regular play sessions make indoor life fully satisfying for a Bengal. Many families also build safe outdoor enclosures (catios) which Bengals love. Our kittens are raised indoors and adapt beautifully to indoor life when their mental and physical needs are met.

We require that you take your new kitten to a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of bringing them home. This is part of the adoption agreement and activates the health guarantee. Your vet will confirm the kitten's health, review the vaccination records, and schedule any upcoming boosters. Establishing a veterinary relationship early is important and we recommend keeping up with annual wellness exams throughout your cat's life.

Absolutely. Dawn loves sending photos and updates to families who have reserved a kitten. Watching your kitten grow from tiny newborn to a rambunctious 12-week-old is one of the most exciting parts of the experience. You can also schedule additional virtual visits during this period to check in on your kitten's progress.

Yes, and she genuinely means it. Dawn checks in on families after kitten placements, loves receiving photos of how the kittens are growing up, and remains available for any questions that come up over the years. She has relationships with families who adopted from her years ago. This is not marketing language. It is how she operates. You are welcome to contact her any time with questions about your Bengal's behavior, health concerns, nutrition, or anything else.
