Bengal kitten at Shady Spots Cat Ranch
The Heart Behind Shady Spots

About Dawn

Breeder, caretaker, and lifelong Bengal lover based in Silver Springs, Nevada. Every kitten raised here is raised by hand, with intention, and with love.

Shady Spots Cat Ranch is not a facility. It is a home. And the difference matters more than anything else in how our kittens turn out.

Dawn DeLay founded Shady Spots Cat Ranch with a single guiding belief: that Bengal kittens raised underfoot, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and rhythms of everyday family life, make better companions than kittens raised in kennels or catteries. The research supports it. So does every family who has taken home one of her kittens.

From the earliest weeks, every kitten at Shady Spots is handled daily. They grow up hearing the television, meeting visitors, being held, played with, and talked to. They learn what it means to be part of a human family before they ever leave for one. This is the foundation of the Shady Spots difference.

"I want every family to feel like they got the best kitten they could have possibly found. That starts with how I raise them — from day one."

Dawn DeLay, Shady Spots Cat Ranch

Dawn is a TICA registered breeder committed to ethical, responsible breeding practices. She selects her breeding pairs carefully for health, temperament, and conformation, with a specific focus on the traits that make Bengals so extraordinary: glitter coats, bold rosettes, athletic build, and the wild appearance of the Asian Leopard Cat ancestor.

She manages a small, intentional program with a limited number of litters per year. This is deliberate. Quality and care cannot be scaled without compromise, and Dawn refuses to compromise. Every kitten she places is a kitten she knows personally and has invested weeks of individual attention into.

Families who adopt from Shady Spots describe the experience as surprisingly personal. Dawn asks questions, answers questions at all hours, welcomes video calls, and stays in touch long after the kitten goes home. She genuinely cares where every Bengal she raises ends up and how they are doing years later.

Based in the high desert of Silver Springs, Nevada, Dawn runs the cattery from her home property surrounded by wide open skies and the quiet that lets her give each cat the attention they deserve. Her Bengals are not just breeding animals. They are her family.

Breeding Philosophy

01 Health First, Always

All breeding cats are TICA registered with documented pedigrees. We test for genetic conditions, maintain vaccination records, and vet-check every kitten before placement. Health is never negotiable.

02 Temperament Matters as Much as Looks

A Bengal with a difficult temperament is not a good cat, regardless of how stunning their coat is. We select breeding pairs for calm, curious, sociable temperament alongside coat quality and conformation.

03 Small Program, Full Attention

We limit the number of litters we have each year so that every kitten receives the individual time and attention they need to become a confident, well-socialized family companion.

04 Honest Matching

Bengals are not for every household. Dawn will tell you honestly if a Bengal is the right fit for your lifestyle, and she will steer you toward the kitten whose personality truly matches your family.

05 Relationships, Not Transactions

The adoption is the beginning of a relationship, not the end of one. Dawn stays in contact with her families, follows up on how kittens are settling in, and remains a resource for years to come.

06 No Kitten Left Behind

Our safe-return policy is absolute. If a family truly cannot keep their Bengal, we will always help find them a safe, loving new home. No Bengal we raised will ever end up without proper care.
